4 Back-end Web Development Basics

Posted by at 03:25 Read our previous post
Are you someone who enjoys logical thinking and problem-solving? Do you get excited by data? Understand and work with spreadsheets effortlessly? If you have a ‘yes’ for all the three queries then you are all set to embark a career in back-end web development.

Back-end development refers to the “server-side” of web development and as a developer your main concern is to make the site work. Your primary responsibility would be making updates and changes in addition to monitoring functionality of the site. The back-end usually comprises of three parts - a server, an application, and a database. Code written by back end developers is what communicates the database information to the browser.

To become a full fledged back-end developer you need to be well versed in the below discussed key areas:

1. Hypertext Transfer Protocol

The Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is an application-level protocol for distributed, collaborative, hypermedia information systems. You must understand how communication takes place between the server and the client, the various HTTP status codes and their definitions.  You must opt for secure connections (such as the popular HTTPs) to ensure security of data.

2. Database Management

Almost all web applications use a database accessible by the web server. You may either use relational database management systems (RDBMSs): MySQL, MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Oracle, DB/2 that uses SQL language or you may use non- relational (so-called NoSQL) database: MongoDB, CouchDB, Cassandra, Redis, Memcached. You need to understand how your data is stored and retrieved from the database. Eventually you should learn how to assure the integrity of data by managing data backup and maintain security by encrypting your databases.

3. Programming Concepts

These are basic principles you need to write down a computer program. Variables, control structures, data structures, syntax and tools are only a few examples to mention among tons of concepts. Once you master the basics that are common to any programming language, transition to others will be pretty easy. Just you have to get your hands on the concepts specific to that particular language.

4. Programming Languages

You can be open to any programming language depending on your specific needs. Some of the most popular languages used for back-end development are Javascript, Ruby, Python, SQL, PHP and Java. Each language has its pros and cons, but you have to decide based on your needs. Your language of choice must be scalable. To elaborate, its structures must allow integration of new codes making the app ready for future challenges. Also the language must be ‘strong’, to develop apps that can handle unexpected situations.

Hope this article helps you to establish a firm footing in your career as a back-end developer!
